A group of handloom weavers laid siege to the welfare board office here on Thursday alleging that lethargy in the processing and disbursal of welfare assistance given away by the State Government through the welfare board.
N. Gopal, president of Tirupur District Handloom Weavers Union, said as many as 150 people were yet to receive the identity cards and pensions were processed in a tardy manner.
V. Kanthasamy, a weaver from Pandian Nagar near here, said he had applied for the pension once turned 60 years of age. “Now I am close to 63 years, but yet to start receiving
the pension,” he added. Similar complaints of tardy disbursal of other welfare assistances too were raised by the weavers.
