Amaravati: The members of weavers’ societies demanded that the government should withdraw Goods Service Tax (GST) on weavers. Several leaders of weavers’ community took part in a round-table meeting held in Vijayawada on Friday.

Andhra Pradesh Cheneta Karmika Samithi general secretary Ginka Chalapathi said the weavers’ community could not face the GST burden when already the sector is facing a severe crisis. He criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for spreading false campaign on protecting the poor.

Telugu Desam Party official spokesperson Panchumarthi Anuradha said the State government would bring the issue to the notice of the Centre. She said that a majority of families of weavers were facing challenges to lead their daily life with low income. The weavers should fight unitedly taking help from all the political parties, said CPI State assistant secretary GVS Satynarayana.

He also said the GST would totally force the weavers to withdraw from their traditional profession. Other leaders T Vishwanatham and S Kota Veeraiah were also present in the meeting. However, the State government too on Friday responded on the issue by recommending to the Centre to exempt the wavers from the purview of GST.
