Govt to connect handloom industry to e-commerce, attract youth to buy handloom products online

SRINAGAR: A day-long awareness programme was organized by the Directorate of Field Publicity (DFP), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, (Units: Srinagar, Chadoora and Rajouri) at Central University Kashmir (CUK), Nowgam, Srinagar on Saturday.

According to an official press note issued here, the programme was aimed at providing information about importance and objectives of National Handloom Day.

Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Nika (Dean Students Welfare Central University Kashmir), Tahir Fidous Shawl (Deputy Director, Department of Handlooms, Srinagar), Neha Jalali (Deputy Director, Directorate of Field Publicity, J&K and AIR News Jammu) and Tahir Ahmad Hakim (Assistant Director, Department of Handlooms Srinagar) spoke on the occasion. All the speakers laid stress upon generating awareness about the importance of handloom industry and its contribution to the socio-economic development, the press note read.

Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Nika in his address appreciated the efforts of Directorate of Field Publicity and said that nowadays our youth is more attracted to imported clothes and synthetic clothes, whereas handloom in Kashmir as been practiced for many centuries.

He said, “Our youth should understand the importance of using domestic cloth. They should have the knowledge that by using handloom products we are helping and encouraging our own artisans, weavers and business.”

He urged the youth to start using handloom products and encourage the society to appreciate the same. He also asked the students of related subjects to adopt this profession which is on the verge of extinction in Kashmir adding that people whose family business was handloom are leaving it because common people do not buy their products, it read further.

Tahir Firdous Shawl in his address talked about the working and organization of handloom department. He said that “government is trying to connect handloom industry to e- commerce so that young buyers buy handloom product online”.

Tahir Ahmad Hakim highlighted various social welfare schemes run by the Government of India for the benefit of the weavers. He said that government has started a branding system for handloom products called as ‘India Handloom Brand’ (IHB) with the concept of zero defect and having zero effect on environment, the press note added.

Neha Jalai underlined the aims and objective of celebrating ‘National Handloom Day’. She said that National Handloom Day was started in the year 2015 by india’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it is celebrated on 7th of August every year in order to make people aware about the importance of Handloom industry and how common masses could help to promote and encourage the handloom industry. She urged the youth “to come forward to promote and use handloom products” in their day to day lives along with other branded and imported textiles.

The weavers, dyers, heads of co-operative societies, teachers, students, and other opinion leaders present in the audience were exposed to the importance of promoting and adopting handloom products in day-to-day lives.

Representatives from DFP informed the gathering that a similar programme on National Handloom Day is being organized on the same day at Jammu University. DFP has a mandate of spreading awareness among masses on various centrally sponsored schemes.

About nine weavers from Srinagar were felicitated at Saturday’s programme for their outstanding contribution in the field of promoting traditional handloom and textile weaving practices.

Film shows (How to prepare Kani Shawl?) was screened for the audience. A random quiz on National Handloom Day was organized for the audience and winners were awarded on the spot.

A troupe from Song and Drama Division mesmerized the audience with their melodious folk songs, it further added.
